Crypto Duuudes
Described by their anonymous creator as "portraits of a multicultural society that resides in the blockchain" Crypto Duuudes are vibrant 3D-rendered characters, each modelled with unique features and accessories, which are sold as NFTs on OpenSea. We spoke to the artist to discover how they're made and the motivations behind the project.“Creating allows us to make tangible what would otherwise exist only inside us...”
Why do you create?
Creating has always been a sort of need for me, ever since I was a child. It's something that often comes instinctively, it's a way to express ideas or feelings. Creating allows us to make tangible what would otherwise exist only inside us, it allows us not only to express ourselves but also to choose how to tell something.

What makes your art unique?
I often try to combine aesthetics and ideas. I want to show that digital artworks and collectibles can be fun but they can also express interesting concepts.
The Crypto Duuudes are digital portraits of a multicultural society. They have been created with the idea of representing and promoting social integration, diversity and social acceptance. The physical features, or clothing of the characters, are often exaggerated in a creative way with the aim of going beyond the limits that our society often imposes.
“...they are one of the first examples of NFT collectibles ever designed in 3D.”
Some artworks are the result of an aesthetic research and the willingness to represent different aspects of a community. Others tell real stories, such as the character #160 titled "A story that deserves to be told", which is a statement against violence on women.
All the Crypto Duuudes characters have been designed with 3D software: they are one of the first examples of NFT collectibles ever designed in 3D. The process of creation combines both standardization and customization.

The main shape of the body, of the head, of the eyes and of the eyebrows is the same for all the characters: this contributes to a result that often does not let you clearly guess the gender of the characters, but leaves room for interpretation and imagination. With this decision I wanted to say that the gender is not so important.
The word "Dude" itself is nowadays often used without distinction of gender, especially online.
With the evolution of the metaverse the concept of gender will tend to disappear: I hope that this will help to bring more equality.
“Many Crypto Duuudes are inspired by artistic disciplines that have always stimulated my interest...”
I spend a lot of time on research and developing ideas. The design of the characters follows simple compositional rules that were often used also by painters in the past. The proportions of the images are designed to be flexible and adaptable to social media.
I think that Twitter is one of the best places to promote NFT artworks: it's populated by many people that are interested in digital art and technology (NFTs, blockchain, cryptos).
Where do you get your inspiration?
Everywhere. I can get inspired by the color combinations of the minerals in a museum of natural history, by a painting, by a movie like Mulholland Drive, by the lyrics of a song...
Many Crypto Duuudes are inspired by artistic disciplines that have always stimulated my interest, such as design, art, fashion and even architecture. Other characters are portraits of people I have known personally, or are inspired by people I see on the street.

The special categories are the result of my interest for literature and philosophy. Mutants represent the concept of change, not only physical but also spiritual and psychological, which is part of our life. I have always been fascinated by narrative works such as Ovid's Metamorphoses in which in all the stories the main characters undergo a sort of mutation.
Cyborgs represent the correlation between human and technology, a topic that influenced many cultural discussions in the last centuries. Heroes and Knights (Armoured Duuudes) have been in the focus of literature of the past such as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, as well as modern movies or comic books, and can also be traced back to topics covered in several philosophical treatises: if we consider the idea of a perfect human being as a goal for humanity, we should not forget that human rights should always come first.
